Anorexia restaurant
Welcome to the Anorexia restaurant “Skin for Skin”. My name is Laila and I will be your waitress today. Let me explain more about the restaurant and the menu. Anorexia is an eating disorder. A mental disorder with the highest death rate. It has genetic, psychological and social causes. The food and weight-related issues are symptoms of something deeper- things like depression, loneliness, insecurity, pressure to be perfect or feeling out of control. Things that no amount of dieting or weight loss can cure.
Can we say that anorexia and other mental disorders are concentration of our society’s problems? Problems fitting into our standards and expectations? And how come being skinny might seem the way to success in life?
But what is skin? Not only the largest organ and outer covering of our bodies, but also protection, sensation, heat regulation and serves also for aesthetics and communication. Skin is a mirror of what’s happening inside our bodies. Skin let’s us know about the time. Skin has always been a sign of a social status and played an important role in everyone’s life. Today a thin skin is treated as a sign of health, success and well-being. Could skin be the thing that actually matters? In food world it actually is. Most of the vegetable and fruit nutrients are concentrated in the skin- the part that we usually throw away. But creating connection between human and food skin we come to the concept of this restaurant for anorexia.
With the small amounts of food consumed, people end up with low nutrition levels which cause physical body problems. Food skins might pack in them even more vitamins than the flesh itself. By consuming small, even minimal amounts of food we can still keep our body functions healthy. From research I have noticed four focus body parts that must be skinny- ribs, hipbones, collar bone and skinny legs. So I serve here four dishes focusing for each body part keeping high vitamin, mineral and fiber levels. This is not a hospital. Anorexia is a different way of eating and in terms of food it should be treated like one. So I give you this proposal of accepting this way and trying to understand it from another point of view.
